Our Story

ABOUT US

Learning. Justice and Ecological Renewal

Khoj – Society for People's Education was founded on a simple belief: education should enable people to understand their realities and shape their futures.

Our journey began with women's adult education. Working alongside women from diverse communities, we recognised that meaningful learning extends beyond literacy. Women sought opportunities to analyse the conditions affecting their lives, build confidence, strengthen their voices, and participate more fully in decisions that shaped their families and communities.

These experiences led to the development of the Khoj pedagogical approach—an approach that connects learning with lived experience, critical thinking, participation, and action.

As our work evolved, we expanded into children's education and community learning. We sought to create educational experiences that nurtured curiosity, creativity, responsibility, and engagement with real-life issues.

Through our engagement with communities, we became increasingly aware of concerns related to food security, nutrition, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, soil health, and climate change. These challenges were deeply connected to learning, livelihoods, and community well-being.

This led us to expand our work into agroecology, ecological gardening, food sovereignty, regenerative farming, and climate action. Today, Khoj works with communities to strengthen local food systems, regenerate ecosystems, conserve biodiversity, and build resilience in the face of environmental change.

Throughout this journey, gender justice has remained central to our work. We believe that sustainable and equitable futures depend upon the knowledge, leadership, and participation of women.

What began as a commitment to women's education has grown into a broader movement for learning, ecological stewardship, food sovereignty, climate resilience, and social transformation.

Our purpose, however, remains unchanged: to support individuals and communities in building more just, resilient, and sustainable futures.

From women's adult education to children's learning, from community empowerment to agroecology and climate action, Khoj's story is the story of connecting learning with life.
